Casey Affleck's film about Joaquin Phoenix is not a spoof that delivers a 'real portrait' of the actor turned musician.

Phoenix has left his movie career behind him to pursue a rapping career and Affleck, who is Phoenix's brother in law, made a documentary following this process.

Speaking to the Press Association Affleck said: "To the outside world there were certain media spectacles that were kind of embarrassing for him and cast him in a very negative light, and I hope that this film in some way goes towards redressing that balance, and giving a real portrait of him during those times.

"He was open to it. We're pretty close and have a really good relationship and I think he trusted me. So he was quite comfortable with it.

"When it began I couldn't foresee all that would happen. I'd be lying if I said that I knew that all the fantastic things in the documentary would take place over the couple of years I spent with him filming, and maybe he would not have wanted me to do so had he known.

"But he had made a commitment to me and let me see it through."

Phoenix was last seen on the big screen back in 2009 in Two Lovers with Gwyneth Paltrow.
