McG used 'Terminator Salvation' to "reinvent himself."

Christian Bale - who plays John Connor in the latest installment from the franchise - has revealed the director took on the action movie as a way of overhauling the storyline and himself at the same time.

He said: "I mean, a guy who keeps on calling himself McG must have a lot of fight in him, you know? Not only did he want to reinvent the mythology, but he also wanted to reinvent himself."

McG had a strong desire to make a very different movie from anything that had been done before. I think to prove himself and others, he has a lot of fight in him.

Meanwhile, Christian - who plays the role of John Connor - has revealed he did not want to accept the role originally and it was McG who persuaded him to play the part.

He added: "McG had a strong desire to make a very different movie from anything that had been done before. I think to prove himself and others, he has a lot of fight in him."

The highly-anticipated action movie - which will be the fourth in the 'Terminator' franchise - will see Christian star alongside Sam Worthington, Moon Bloodgood and Helena Bonham Carter.

It is due for release on July 3.
