Director Christopher Nolan is reportedly not returning for the next 'Batman' film.

The filmmaker, who helmed the first two movies in the rejuvenated franchise, is said to be unhappy with studio Warner Brothers wish to include The Joker as a character in the movie.

The late Heath Ledger played the villain in critically acclaimed blockbuster 'The Dark Knight' and before his accidental death he was set to reprise the role in the new movie, according to the plot the director had planned.

An industry source has been quoted by website Batman-On-Film.com as saying Nolan - who is currently shooting 'Inception' - is not prepared to see another actor take on the part and will walk away from the project if this happens.

Christian Bale is set to reprise his role as Batman for a third time, while Johnny Depp and Philip Seymour Hoffman are rumoured to be playing villains The Riddler and The Penguin.

Depp described the prospect of playing The Riddler as "fun".
