Animation movie Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs has comfortably toppled I Can Do Bad All By Myself to top the U.S. box office.

Early box office figures predicted that the movie, which is based the children's book by Judi Barrett and Ron Barrett, would snatch the number one spot, and it went on to gross $30.1 million.

The movie follows a scientist tries to solve world hunger only to see things go awry as food falls from the sky in abundance.

Matt Damon's latest collaboration with Steven Soderburgh, The Informant, opened at number two with a gross of $10.5 million.

Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself had to be content with the number three spot while Jennifer Aniston's Love Happens only managed number four.

It was a disappointing opener for Diablo Cody's new movie Jennifer's Body, which sees Megan Fox in her first lead role, as it opened at five with a gross of just $6.8 million.

There was a four place drop for animation picture 9 while Inglourious Basterds also dropped four places from three to seven.

3. I Can Do Bad All By Myself - $10 million.

4. Love Happens - $8.5 million.

5. Jennifer's Body - $6.8 million.

6. 9 - $5.5 million.

7. Inglourious Basterds - $3.6 million.

8. All About Steve - $3.4 million.

9. Sorority Row - $2.5 million.

10. The Final Destination - $2.4 million.
