Denzel Washington Likes Being Ordinary

Denzel Washington was attracted to his new movie because he got to wear fake diamond jewellery.

The actor stars as subway dispatcher-turned-hostage negotiator Walter Garber in 'The Taking of Pelham 1, 2, 3' and says he loved the ordinariness of his character.

He said: "Overweight, shirt too tight, spilling coffee on myself, and tripping and falling. I like the fact that he's just a regular Joe. There's nothing special about him. He's not heroic. He's got a fake diamond earring - Zircon. He's an ordinary man in extraordinary circumstances."

I could read the minds of these people. You knew that they were thinking, 'Denzel is riding the subway now? What is he doing down here?'

Denzel admits that people found it weird to see him travelling on the subway as part of his role.

He added: "I could read the minds of these people. You knew that they were thinking, 'Denzel is riding the subway now? What is he doing down here?'

"My workdays would start a quarter of a mile down below the city of New York. We mostly used an old station called Church Avenue. When I'd finish filming at 3 or 4 in the morning, the subway workers would be down there, plus other trains would slow down and the people would see me.

"I remember this one woman's face. She just couldn't stop staring - and then she started making faces at me."
