Dustin Hoffman has signed on to star in upcoming drama 'Barney's Version'.

The 71-year-old actor will play the father of Paul Giamatti's titular character Barney Panofsky, a reckless former cop who is the prime suspect in the mysterious disappearance of his best friend.

In a series of flashbacks, the film traces the colourful life of Barney, from his childhood to his three tumultuous marriages, two children and eventual police investigation.

The film - which is based on Mordecai Richler's novel of the same name - will be helmed by 'CSI' director Richard J. Lewis.

The script was penned by 'Fire and Ice' writer Michael Konyves and will be produced by Robert Lantos, who has worked on 'Eastern Promises', 'Never Talk To Strangers' and 'Being Julia'.

Filming is scheduled to start in Rome in August.
