Ewan McGregor has described working on his new movie Beginner as a 'true creative collaboration'.

The actor teams up with filmmaker Mike Mills on the new project which is based on the director's relationship with his father.

McGregor takes on the role of Oliver in the movie - whose father admits that he is gay at the age of seventy five.

Speaking to Access Hollywood McGregor said: "He's an amazing director and our work together was that of real, true creative collaboration so we kind of worked it through together.

"There was never a sense that he was trying to make me play him or mimic him or give a kind of impersonation of him," the actor told Access Hollywood.

"He wanted to make [McGregor's character Oliver] my own, but at the same time I very much wanted to feel like Mike because it is his story and these are his words.

"These are the scenes he's chosen to put in the film and they are very important to him."

McGregor is currently filming Jack and the Giant Killer with Bryan Singer and has already completed work on Haywire, The Impossible and Salmon Fishing In The Yemen.

Beginners is released 22nd July.
