Gerard Butler

Gerard Butler has admitted that he could relate to some of the experiences of his latest character Sam Childers.

The Scotsman is back on the big screen this week with Machine Gun Preacher which tells the true story of Childers - who went from inmate to protecting children in the Sudan.

And Butler reveals that he could connect with the destructive path of Childers.

Speaking to Empire the actor said: “I could relate to that aspect of Sam. When I was younger I got chucked in prison a couple of times.

“I was a wild child, travelling the US, drinking and breaching the peace, I went from being incredibly self-destructive, struggling to find my place in life, to acting and getting my shit together.”

Machine Gun Preacher sees Marc Forster return to the director’s chair while Michelle Monaghan and Michael Shannon are also on the cast list.

And there are plenty of Butler projects on the way as he is also set to star in Movie 43 and Coriolanus and Playing The Field next year.

Machine Gun Preacher is released 2nd November.
