Gnomeo & Juliet

Gnomeo & Juliet

Gnomeo and Juliet has raced to the top of the UK box office, ending the two week reign of Disney's Tangled.

The movie is a new take on Romeo and Juliet and brings together an all star voice cast of James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Michael Caine and Ozzy Osbourne.

Garden gnomes Gnomeo (McAvoy) and Juliet (Blunt) have as many obstacles to overcome as their quasi namesakes when they are caught up in a feud between neighbours.

But with plastic pink flamingos and lawnmower races in the mix, can this young couple find lasting happiness?

The movie took £2.9 million at the box office this weekend to comfortably topple Tangled and hold off The King's Speech.

The Colin Firth movie, which dominated the Baftas this weekend, remained at number two while Tangled dropped to three after two weeks at number one.

There was a second new entry at number four in the form of True Grit. Joel and Ethan Coen's remake of the John Wayne movie.

Yogi Bear was also new in at five with a fourth new entry, comedy Just Go With It, right behind at six.

Black Swan was down three places while The Fighter was one of this week's biggest fallers as it dropped five places from three to eight.

Keira Knightley returned to the top ten with her new movie Never Let Me Go, which sees her team up with Carey Mulligan and Andrew Garfield, as it opened at number eight.

Sanctum 3D was another five place faller this week as it was down from five to round off this week's top ten.
