Sherlock Holmes' famous catchphrase has been dropped from the new movie.

Director Guy Ritchie has decided to drop several elements associated with the detective - including his famous 'Elementary, my dear Watson' signature saying and deerstalker hat -from his new movie, which sees Robert Downey Jr. in the title role.

Rachel McAdams, who also appears in the movie, said: "I don't know if he ever worked the catchphrase in anywhere.

Well, you've got to watch the hair

"He didn't wear a deerstalker either. Well, you've got to watch the hair. I tried to wear one actually. I came on set with a deerstalker. I was like, 'No one else is wearing one!'"

Despite the changes, Rachel claims some aspects of the iconic character still remain.

She added to MTV Movies: "He does have the pipe."

'Sherlock Holmes', which also stars Jude Law as the detective's sidekick Doctor Watson, opens in cinemas in December.
