Jean-Luc Godard has refused to travel to the U.S. for a prestigious honour from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences - because he doesn't need "a bit of metal".

The French film auteur was selected to receive an honorary Academy Award at the 2010 Governors Awards in November (10), but his wife insists the 79-year-old Breathless director would not be attending the prestigious event in Los Angeles.

Godard's wife Anne-Marie Mieville tells The Australian, "He just told me, 'It's not the Oscars'.

"At first he thought it was going to be part of the same ceremony, then he realized it was a separate thing in November.

"Jean-Luc won't go to America, he's getting old for that kind of thing. Would you go all that way just for a bit of metal?"

But Mieville insists Godard will to respond to the Academy regarding the honour.

Francis Ford Coppola will also be honoured at the 2010 Governors Awards.
