John Cusack thinks the recession makes film making "very exciting".

The '2012' actor believes budget cuts in the current financial climate will see a shift away from big-budget blockbusters in favour of more simple methods of filmmaking.

He said: "I believe that new forms and styles develop automatically no matter what happens around it. '2012' is a product of Old Hollywood - a huge blockbuster that Sony promotes around the world - and the company does that better than anyone else.

"It is much more difficult to get money for projects in the middle budget class. The exception is a very specific genre of popcorn movies.

"I find it very exciting that everyone can have cheap digital camera and shoot an own movie.

"Making smaller films will be soon much cooler. And really good directors will also just do their own thing in the future."

Despite the financial struggles, John admits he hasn't been personally affected but doesn't understand why he has continued to do so well.

He added to Spiegel Online: "In most cases and for some unknown reasons everything is running for me against the general trend. If the others have it easy I suffer. When I have it easy the others suffer. I've no idea why this is.

"Of the last seven films I made I've produced three - and this during the hardest times in Hollywood. So I was perhaps a little lucky. But the crisis clearly hit the industry."
