'Pirates of the Caribbean 4' will be "scaled down" from the previous movies.

Filming is set to begin on the latest movie in the swashbuckling franchise next spring but Disney's head of production Oren Aviv insists it won't be as epic as the previous releases.

He said: "It's important to get the story right and it's important to me to scale it down, because we can't get bigger.

We're going to shoot Pirates 4 in April and May of next year

"The movies have gotten bigger and bigger and very complicated and they were satisfying on so many levels obviously, but I want to kind of reboot the whole thing and bring it down to its core, its essence, just characters.

"We're going to shoot Pirates 4 in April and May of next year. We are going to release it hopefully in 2011 is the plan."

Oren also said he hoped the movie - which will see Johnny Depp return as Captain Jack Sparrow - will "hopefully be the first of another trilogy."

Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom are not expected to reprise their roles for the new film.
