Keira Knightley has described her latest movie character as one of the most positive that she has ever played.

The actress is back on the big screen this week as she teams up with funnyman Steve Carell for Seeking A Friend For the End of the World.

Knightley takes on the role of Penny in the movie who breaks up with her boyfriend before going on a road trip with Carell as the world is coming to an end.

Speaking to The Press Association the actress said: "I think she's one of the most positive characters I've ever played.

"She's certainly at a time in her life when everything is changing and she doesn't know who she's meant to be or who she's meant to be with, which I think is a place that a lot of people in their mid to late 20s find themselves, and it just so happens that the world is ending, and she still doesn't know where she's meant to be, or who she's meant to be with.

"It's sort of about what becomes important, and that's love, and friendship, and companionship and the wonderful moments in life."

And Knightley will return to the period drama later this year as she has reunited with Joe Wright for the big screen adaptation of Anna Karenina.

This will be the third collaboration between Knightley and Wright and it is one of the early Oscar movies.

Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World is released 13th July.
