The all-star animated sequel Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa has surpassed all expectation to storm the US box office and prevent High School Musical from making it a hat trick of weeks at the number one spot.

The DreamWorks movie, starring Ben Stiller, Jada Pinkett Smith, Chris Rock and David Schwimmer, among others, scored a whopping $63.5 million in its opening week on release. The family film grossed more money than the rest of the top four put together.

Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe and Gloria the hippo, King Julien, Maurice and the penguins are all back and left marooned on the distant shores of Madagascar, the New Yorkers have hatched a plan so crazy it just might work. With military precision, the penguins have repaired an old crashed plane, sort of.

Once aloft, this unlikely crew stays airborne just long enough to make it to the wildest place of all, the vast plains of Africa itself, where our zoo-raised crew encounters species of their own kind for the very first time.

Role Models, which stars Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott opened in the number two spot while High School Musical had fallen two places to number three.

Clint Eastwood's Changeling, starring Angelina Jolie, held on to the number four spot while Seth Rogen comedy Zack and Miri Make a Porno fell two places to number five.

Soul Men was the only other new entry in the top ten as Samuel Jackson and Bernie Mac join forces as the two remaining members of the popular soul band, The Real Deal, from the 1970's, Floyd Henderson, now a retired businessman, and ne'er-do-well, ex-convict, Louis Hinds, take a road trip to the Apollo Theatre for a musical tribute to their recently deceased front man, Marcus Hook.
