Matt Smith has revealed that he needed medical treatment on the set of his new movie Womb.

The actor refused to use a stunt double when shooting scenes in the Baltic Sea and struggled to cope with the cold.

Speaking to the Daily Star the actor said: "It was in St Peter-Ording, on the north coast of Germany. They said I could use a double but I'd worked myself up to do it.

"So I went into the sea three times. It was the coldest I've ever been. The next shot we did, we were running along the beach and I was suddenly so frozen I just hit the deck. I couldn't move."

Womb sees the British actor star alongside Eva Green in the Benedek Fliegauf directed movie.

But he looks set to see his star rise later this year as he takes over the role of The Doctor in BBC's flagship Saturday night show Doctor Who.

He becomes the eleventh actor to take on the central role of the Doctor as Steven Moffat takes over as head writer and executive producer from Russell T Davies.
