Michael Caine has described the plot of The Dark Knight Rises as 'extraordinary'.

Let me tell you... the plot is extraordinary... really extraordinary. I know why he wants to keep it a secret.

The British actor is set to reprise the role of Alfred Pennyworth in the third Batman movie, which sees Christian Bale back as Bruce Wayne and Christopher Nolan back in the director's chair.

And while Caine couldn't give too much away about the plot he admits that it is going to be an exciting movie.

Speaking to Collider the actor said: "We've all signed the Official Secrets Act. I'm lucky to be able to tell you the title of the movie.

"I remember I did an interview and someone said to me, 'What are you doing next?' I said, 'I'm doing Batman'. I saw Chris and he said, 'Why did you tell them you were doing Batman? You're supposed to keep it secret'... I couldn't keep that a secret."

He added: "Let me tell you... the plot is extraordinary... really extraordinary. I know why he wants to keep it a secret.

"You really need not to know till you see the movie."

It was back in 2008 that The Dark Knight graced the big screen - going on to gross over $1 billion and be one of the most praised superhero movies of all time.

The Dark Knight Rises is set for a July 2012 release.
