Animation movie monsters vs Aliens has stormed to the top of the US box office grossing over $58 million in it's opening weekend.

The Dreamworks animation, which boasts the voice talent of Reese Witherspoon, Kiefer Sutherland and Hugh Laurie, follows California girl Susan Murphy is unexpectedly clobbered by a meteor full of outer space gunk, she mysteriously grows to 49-feet-11-inches tall and is instantly labelled a "monster" named Ginormica.

The military jumps into action, and she is captured and held in a secret government compound. The world learns that the military has been quietly rounding up other monsters over the years. But Their confinement time is cut short however, when a mysterious alien robot lands on Earth and begins storming the country.

The Haunting of Connecticut, which was also a new entry at number two, was along way behind the animation movie grossing $23 million.

Last week's number one Knowing had to settle for number three, sliding two places after just one week at the top spot.

I Love You, Man was also down from last week's number two to number four while Duplicity rounded off the top five after also dropping two places.

12 Rounds was the only other new entry inside the top ten opening at number seven.

9. "Taken," $2.75 million.

10. "The Last House on the Left," $2.6 million.
