Monsters vs Aliens has powered to the top of the UK box office grossing over £4.3 million in it's opening weekend ending Knowing's one week reign at the number one spot.

The film, which boasts the voice talent of Reese Witherspoon and Kiefer Sutherland, the film follows Susan Murphy is unwittingly clobbered by a meteor full of outer space gunk on her wedding day, she mysteriously grows to 49-feet-11-inches tall. Alerted to the threat of this new monster, the military jumps into action and Susan is captured and secreted away to a covert government compound.

But before long the government require Susan and the other monsters that she is imprisoned with help to fight off an alien invasion.

Richard Curtis' new movie The Boast That Rocks, that has an impressive cast list of Philip Seymour Hoffman, Bill Nighy and Rhys Ifans, opened at number two while Nicolas Cage's Knowing fell two places to number three.

Comedy Marley and Me fell two places from two to four while there was a two place slump for The Haunting In Connecticut as it fell from three to five.

Both Paul Blart: Mall Cop and The Damned United both dropped out of the top five falling from four to six and five to seven.

Comic book adaptation The Watchmen rounded off the top ten while Gran Torino has had the longest spell in the top ten enjoying it's seventh week on the chart at this week's number nine.
