Cage Strikes a Blow for Single Fathers

Nicolas Cage made his latest movie character a single father in a bid to destroy the 'myth' that men can't look after kids on their own.

In Knowing, the actor plays a widower whose young son discovers a document detailing every major disaster that has happened, and three that haveyet to take place.

There seems to be this archetype that if you're a man and single, you're incapable of raising a child, which I think needs to be broken

Having been a single dad himself - to 18-year-old son Weston - the starwas determined to show men can raise kids as well as women, and wanted to make the film to balance out the slew of movies about single mums.

Cage explains, "I have seen a lot of movies with single mothers and their children. They're good, but there are not so many with capable single fathers. There seems to be this archetype that if you're a man and single, you're incapable of raising a child, which I think needs to be broken. If you find yourself in that position - like I have - it's important not to give up because of what people tell you".
