Pre-Oscar favourites No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood are leading the nominations with eight nods each.Both pictures, which have won rave reviews, find themselves up for Best Picture alongside Atonement, Juno and Michael Clayton.And while Atonement picked up seven nominations Keira Knightley, James McAvoy and director Joe Wright have all been left out of their respected categories.Leading the British charge is actor Daniel Day Lewis who has been nominated for Best Actor for his role in There Will Be Blood, alongside Sweeney Todd star Johnny Depp.George Clooney, Tommy Lee Jones and Viggo Mortensen complete the category.Best Actress favourite Julie Christie finds herself nominated for Best Actress with Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Laura Linney and Cate Blanchett, who is also nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the Bob Dylan biopic I'm Not There.Ethan and Joel Coen hope to make up for their disappointment at the Golden Globes with a Best Director nomination for No Country for Old Men they are joined by Paul Thomas Anderson for There Will Be Blood, Tony Gilroy for Michael Clayton , Jason Reitman for Juno and Golden Globe winner Julian Schnabel.Thirteen year old Saoirse Ronan secured a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her role in Atonement alongside British actress Tilda Swinton, Ruby Dee and Amy Ryan.And Javier Bardem is runaway favourite for Best Supporting Actor other in the category include Casey Affleck, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Hal Holbrook and Tom Wilkinson.
Other surprise absentees include Sweeney Todd for Best Picture, despite winning an Golden Globe, and director Tim Burton.
Also missing out in all the major categories is Sean Penn's Into the Wild and Charlie Wilson's War which stars Tom Hanks.
The ceremony is scheduled to take place on 24 February in L. A. and will be hosted by Jon Stewart.
However it's still unknown what impact the current writer's strike will have on the show as the stars refused to cross the picket lines at the recent Golden Globes reducing it to a press conference.
