Peter Berg believes that The Avengers was the reason that his movie Battleship struggled at the U.S. box office.

The blockbuster enjoyed international success but struggled in the States. However despite the disappointment the director hints that he would like to return for a sequel.

Speaking to MTV News the director said: "The movie kicked butt internationally, but we kind of ran into a wall when Avengers refused to go away.

"The Avengers outperformed everything. It was impossible for Battleship to get any oxygen.

"What I need everyone to do is go see Battleship now that they've seen Avengers five times. If they do that, we can definitely make a sequel.

"Battleship is a film that I would definitely like to do a sequel to. I loved making that film. I had a great time with it."

Battleship has grossed in excess of $298 million at the global box office, making back it's $150 million budget. But only $40.2 million of the overall gross has come from the USA.

Berg is tackling a much smaller project for his next movie as he is set to reunite with Taylor Kitsch once again for Lone Survivor, which will also star mark Wahlberg and Ben Foster.
