Madsen Campaigns For Petrol Signs.RESERVOIR DOGS star MICHAEL MADSEN is battling to save a tiny piece of American history - petrol station signs. The crusading actor is desperate to halt plans to pull down the iconic orange spheres - known as '76 Balls' - at Union 76 petrol stations throughout the Western United States, because they hold so many special memories. The signs have become a familiar sight to travellers searching for a pit stop, but are now being replaced by the flatter, red signs of Union 76's parent company.Madsen joined the preservation effort after he saw a blog-based campaign for the issue on the internet. And now he's desperate to stop the destruction of an important piece of America's past by joining the protest. He says, "There seems to be this driving force to tear down everything that's a little old."These are things that were landmarks, it's a symbol that I remember from childhood. What's the point of smashing them and putting up flat signs?

"I get so mystified by things like that. Not only do they want to take them down, but they are going to make sure they smash everyone of them into pieces."

It's not the first time Madsen has petitioned for a road icon. The actor is currently in negotiations to snap up a red London telephone box for his garden.
