Rob Lowe maintains total abstinence
Recovering alcoholic Rob Lowe refuses to drink even a sip of wine, fearing he could relapse at any moment.
The actor, who went to rehab in the 1980s to deal with substance abuse demons, has been sober for the last 19 years - but still avoids alcohol so he isn't tempted to fall back into old habits.
When asked if he enjoys the occasional glass, Lowe tells Britain's Hello magazine, "Never ever. For me, what works is early on I bought into thevery standard thing about sobriety. You either are an addict alcoholic or you are not. Some people say, 'You were 26 years old, maybe it's different now.'
So I look back thinking it's one of the greatest things I've ever doneRob Lowe
They may be right. But for me, it's not worth finding out. "At that moment it (sobriety) made all the difference in my life. I don't know that my life would be where it is today without it. And I love my life today. So I look back thinking it's one of the greatest things I've ever done".
Meanwhile the star admits he struggled on set while working with funnyman Ricky Gervais in new comedy The Invention Of Lying. Saying it was "frustrating" because the Brit kept ruining scenes by giggling through them.
The former The West Wing star insists his director and co-star couldn't keep a straight face for some comic moments.
He says, "He would laugh in the middle of takes and ruin everything... so that was frustrating."
Lowe, on the other hand, insists he has never "ruined a take" by laughing - even though many stars have tried to break his cool.
He says, "That's just a badge of honour. I come from the old school; I was a child actor (and) you're not supposed to break up on stage.
"People over the years have tried (to make me laugh) - Mike Myers in Wayne's World was probably the first, Dana Carvey, Chris Farley... Never once."
