Rooney Mara has revealed that starring in A Nightmare on Elm Street was 'exhausting' rather than scary.

The actress takes on the central female role of Nancy in Samuel Bayer's remake which sees Jackie Earle Haley take over the iconic role of Freddy Krueger.

Speaking at the premiere of the movie she said: "Except for a few times where I was scared, it was not that scary but definitely exhausting, for sure."

But the actress admitted that she was nervous about taking over the role of Nancy in the revamp of the horror classic.

"I was very nervous, but after sitting down with the director and talking about it, our version of Nancy was just so different that I had to forget about all the pressure and expectations and go with the Nancy that we created."

Despite starring in the movie it would seem that horror movies really aren't Rooney's cup of tea: I saw the original when I was 12.

"There was like three years when I was quite young that I loved horror films, but I don't see them ever now, I don't like being scared or watching them."

A Nightmare On Elm Street is released 7th May.
