'Buffy The Vampire Slayer' is to be made into a new movie - without the original cast or writer.

The franchise's rights holders, Fran Rubel Kuzui and Kaz Kazui, have confirmed they are in talks with Vertigo Entertainment to resurrect the character - played on the big screen in 1992 by Kirsty Swanson and in the long-running TV series by Sarah Michelle Gellar - for a new film, though the main cast and creator Joss Whedon will not be involved.

Fran said: "It was Vertigo's interest in taking Buffy into a new place that grabbed us.

The rights holders say they have not ruled out the possibility of getting Joss - who penned both the original movie and the TV series - involved but confirmed the new film will not feature supporting characters including Angel, Willow, Xander and Spike and will have a new Buffy.

The group are currently considering potential storyline ideas.
