Sarah Michelle Gellar has publicly condemned plans for a big screen reboot of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, branding the movie "a horrible idea".

The franchise began with the 1992 film of the same name, starring Kristy Swanson, and the small screen series with Gellar in the lead role followed.

The cult TV show came to an end in 2003, but is now set to be revived with a new film featuring a different star actress - but without any input from franchise creator and lead writer Joss Whedon.

Gellar admits she is angry about the movie plans, calling it "the dumbest idea" to exclude Whedon from the remake.

She tells CNN, "It was a movie. It's been made. It stars Kristy Swanson. They don't need to make another one.

"I think it's a horrible idea! To try to do a Buffy without Joss Whedon? To be incredibly non-eloquent, that's the dumbest idea I've ever heard!"

Other stars of the TV show, including Alyson Hannigan, Michelle Trachtenberg and Anthony Head, have all previously spoken out against the plans.
