Sigourney Weaver has revealed that she was desperate to join the Avatar and work alongside James Cameron once more.

The actress takes on the role of Dr. Grace Augustine who accompanies Jake, played by Sam Worthington, to Pandora.

Speaking at the UK press conference the actress said: "I was always a great admirer of the challenges that Jim took on.

"I have to say I was absolutely thrilled when Jim called and said, very sweetly, 'Would you mind taking a look at this?' I spent the next three days reading the script, which I have to say was so ambitious on every level.

"I certainly wanted to be part of the adventure. You're never in better hands, there's no-one who's going to fight harder, stay longer and work harder to give the audience a hell of an experience."

This isn’t the first time that the actress has teamed up with the visionary filmmaker after starring in Aliens, which Cameron wrote and directed in 1986.

Avatar is released 17th December.
