Simon Pegg based his 'Star Trek' character on his father-in-law.

The 'Spaced' star - who plays Scotty in the latest film in the sci-fi franchise - used his wife and her father's accents for inspiration on perfecting his dialogue.

The 39-year-old actor told BANG Showbiz: "My inspiration for my Scottish accent was my father-in-law James, who I'm sort of channelling for that part. He's a working class Glaswegian man who I absolutely adore and I wanted to make Scotty a tribute to him in some way.

Basically, I'm doing him, I'm doing my wife, I'm doing my whole Scottish family

"Basically, I'm doing him, I'm doing my wife, I'm doing my whole Scottish family. That sounds weird."

Chris Pine, who plays Captain Kirk, said the 'Shaun of the Dead' star's performance was so convincing it upstaged the rest of the cast on several occasions.

Pine said: "I didn't think of myself as the main character. Obviously, I'm Captain Kirk, but the others - particularly Simon - were definitely scene stealers."
