Snow White And The Huntsman

Charlize Theron and Kristen Stewart have fought off competition from the Men in Black to debut their new action adventure Snow White And The Huntsman at the top of the U.S. box office chart.

The dark take on the traditional fairytale, co-starring Chris Hemsworth, opened at number one with a $56.1 million haul, knocking last week's (ends27May12) most popular film, Men In Black 3, into second place with $28 million .

Hemsworth's other big blockbuster, The Avengers, in which he plays ancient god Thor, grossed another $19.8 million to place third.

The Marvel superhero film has now taken $1.3 billion at the global box office since its release at the end of April (12), making it the third biggest movie of all time.

The Avengers replaces Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 in the coveted countdown and now only sits behind James Cameron's Titanic ($2.1 billion) and Avatar ($2.7 billion).
