'Star Trek' producers are working on an "unpredictable" storyline for the planned sequel.
Although the recent movie - which starred Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto - has allowed them to create an alternate reality to keep fans interested, writer-and-producer Alex Kurtzman says it is vital the next instalment of the sci-fi franchise is equally as gripping.
He explained: "One of the obstacles that we found ourselves butting up against was this idea that we already knew the fate of the characters.
I don't think we ever need to talk about time travel again. In fact, in the end of the movie, the device that allows time travel is destroyed. So we're stuck with this universe we're in now.
"If you're going to bring a whole new iteration of 'Star Trek' to life, you could never put them in any real danger - because you already know how they either died or lived. So, we felt like, all right, we have to find a way to make the future unpredictable, so whenever they're in these difficult, treacherous situations there truly is the risk of death."
Meanwhile, fellow writer Roberto Orci thinks they have made it difficult for themselves.
He explained: "I don't think we ever need to talk about time travel again. In fact, in the end of the movie, the device that allows time travel is destroyed. So we're stuck with this universe we're in now."
His co-scribe agreed, saying: "Now we're in this new world, and we're just going to have to live through the unpredictable future."
