Steven Soderbergh is to tackle one of America's most controversial stories of 2009 after signing on to write a play about the death of Florida toddler Caylee Anthony.

The little girl's mother, Casey, is charged with killing her. The mum has pleaded not guilty to the murder. Caylee's remains were found in December 2008.

Soderbergh's play, Tot Mom, is to debut at Australia's Sydney Theatre Company in December (09).

The STC's artistic directors are Cate Blanchett and her husband, writer Andrew Upton.

Rehearsals are due to begin in early November 2009, with the production scheduled to open 23rd December, 2009.

The filmmaker is enjoying major success with his latest movie The Informant, which reunites him with his Ocean's star Matt Damon.

The movie has played extensively on the festive circuit so far this year to great reviews and is a movie that could feature during the awards season.
