Superbad Still On Top As U.s. Cinemas Break Box Office Record....Comedy Superbad is still super good at the top of the U.S. box office, claiming a second week at number one and helping American cinemas to their most successful summer on record.The Judd Apatow movie grossed $18 million (£9 million) over the weekend to take its 10-day total to $68.6 million (£34.3 million).And thanks to Superbad and a host of other big summer blockbusters, Hollywood executives can boast the $4 billion summer.
With a week to go before America's official end of summer Labor Day weekend (31Aug-03Sep07), the country's top 12 films brought in more than $90 million (£45 million) at the box office this weekend. That tips the overall season figure over $4 billion.The summer figure topped $3.95 billion in 2004.British comedy Mr. Bean's Holiday headed the list of new releases, coming in behind Superbad, The Bourne Ultimatum and Rush Hour 3 to claim the new chart's fourth spot with a $10.1 million (£5.05 million) opening weekend.Jason Statham and Jet Li's new action film has opened in fifth spot with $10 million (£5 million), while the film adaptation of The Nanny Diaries, starring Scarlett Johansson, debuts at six with a $7.8 million (£3.9 million) weekend take.
