The Dark Knight Gets American Re-Release

The Dark Knight looks set to return to cinemas throughout America and Canada on the run up to the Oscars as the film tries to drum up support from Academy voters.

Studios often re-release movies and the film is already being talked about for a series of gongs especially for Heath Ledger's, who died last year from an accidental overdose, performance as the Joker.

The actor has won a series of awards in recent weeks for his performance including the Golden Globe for best Supporting Actor. This was followed by a Bafta nomination in the same category and an Oscar nod is expected.

The film was one of the big winners when the Bafta nominations were announced on Wednesday just behind The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Slumdog Millionaire, who had eleven votes, with nine and is now considered one of the front runner for the Oscars.

And the film is expected to feature heavily, when the Academy announces the nominations on Jan 22nd, in the technical categories but there are now growing whispers that The Dark Knight could find itself in the best Picture category.

The re-release is also expected to see the film break through the $1 billion barrier and it would join the three other movies, Titanic, The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, who have achieved that feat.
