The Ugly Truth hangs onto the top of the Australian box office for the second consecutive week.

The battle of the sexes movie, which stars Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler, has to hold off strong competition from District 9.

The science fiction movie is the debut film for Neill Blomkamp and produced by Peter Jackson. Thirty years ago, aliens made first contact with Earth. Humans waited for the hostile attack, or the giant advances in technology.

Neither came. Instead, the aliens were refugees, the last survivors of their home world.

The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africa's District 9 as the world's nations argued over what to do with them. Now, patience over the alien situation has run out.

The film is the current box office leader in the State and Blomkamp has admitted that he would love to produce a sequel.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra fell one place from two to three and there was also a one place drop for Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince at four with My Sister's Keeper hung onto fifth.

Horror movie Orphan was another new entry at number eight while Bandslam entered the chart at number nine.
