Will Smith will not star in Steven Spielberg's next project. The 'Hancock' actor was widely believed to be starring as Bobby Seale, the founder of the Black Panthers civil rights group in a film version of the infamous Chicago Seven trial.Despite saying in January he was "confident" he was going to be involved and had even been briefed on filming dates, Will appeared to backtrack at the 'Hancock' premiere on Wednesday (18.06.08).He told reporters: "I doubt I will be in it. Or probably not anyway."The Chicago Seven - originally the Chicago Eight - were defendants charged over protests which took place during the 1968 Democratic Convention.Early on in their trial, Bobby Seale launched several attacks on the judge, branding him a "fascist dog", "pig" and "racist". The judge ordered for him to be bound and gagged in the courtroom and later sentenced him to four years in prison for contempt - one of the longest sentences given for the offence at the time - which reduced the eight to seven. In February 1970, all seven remaining defendants were found not guilty of conspiracy, with two acquitted completely, and five were convicted of crossing state lines with the intent to incite a riot. Those five were each sentenced to five years in prison and fined $5,000.However, the convictions were overturned in November 1972, who ruled the judge in the case was biased.
