Will Smith is to produce a movie about a Hurricane Katrina hero.

The Hollywood actor has teamed up with Overbrook Entertainment and Sony Pictures Entertainment to buy the rights to the story of John Keller, an ex-Marine who was hailed a hero during the 2005 natural disaster.

Keller saved the lives of 244 of his New Orleans neighbours - many of whom were elderly or disabled - after their building was severely flooded by the hurricane.

An initial script about Keller - which was written by Adetoro Makinde - has already been bought and will form the basis of the script.

Director John Lee Hancock - who previously worked on 'The Alamo' and 'The Rookie' - has been lined up to work on the rewrite and direct the blockbuster.

It is thought the 'Seven Pounds' actor might also play the lead role.
