Zac Efron is desperate to leave his cute Disney image behind - he's eyeing a role as a Bond villain.

The actor is already set to star in a "sexy thriller" from the writer of The Thomas Crown Affair in a bid to shake off his teen idol image, and now he wants to star in the 007 franchise, alongside Daniel Craig's superspy.

He says, "I'm a huge James Bond fan. I'd love to be a Bond baddie. I've seen pretty much every Bond film.

"Sean Connery is my favourite and I really like Goldeneye with Pierce Brosnan."

After the release of High School Musical 3: Senior Year in 2008 Efron has tried to broaden his acting range this year, and enjoyed success doing so.

He turned his hand to comedy earlier in the year with 17 Again, which topped the U.S box office. It's a change of pace one again for the young star as he takes on a more dramatic role in Me and Orsen Welles.

The movie follows a teenager (Efron) who is cast in the Mercury Theatre production of "Julius Caesar" directed by a young Orson Welles in 1937.

On the horizon for Efron includes The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud and possibly Jonny Quest, not a musical in sight.
