Iñárritu picked up a second consecutive Best Director nomination while The Revenant was also nominated for Best Film and Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio's central performance as frontiersman Hugh Glass.

Speaking after the nominations were announced, the filmmaker said: "I am thrilled our film has been recognized by BAFTA and I want to thank them for this honour.

"I am so happy for Leo, Tom and our entire cast and crew whose passion and hard work on this film was unparalleled."

These latest Bafta nominations come a year after the director's last film Birdman picked up nine nominations; winning Best Cinematography on the night.

The Best Film category is a tough one as The Revenant is nominated alongside The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Carol, and Spotlight. Leonardo DiCaprio is already the hot favourite to scoop Best Actor and is nominated alongside Eddie Redmayne, Bryan Cranston, Matt Damon, and Michael Fassbender for The Danish Girl, Trumbo, The Martian, and Steve Jobs.

Iñárritu lost out on the Best Director Bafta a year ago as Richard Linklater triumphed for Boyhood. This year, Best Director is another tough category as Adam McKay, Steven Spielberg, Todd Haynes, and Ridley Scott are also nominated for their work on The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Carol, and The Martian.

The Revenant is in the Golden Globe mix tonight as the film has been nominated in four categories; Best Picture/Drama, Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Original Score.

The Bafta winners will be announced on Sunday 14 February. The Revenant is released 15th January.
