Angelina Jolie says that Maleficent ‘respects the classic’.

Jolie will be returning to the big screen next month to take on the title character in the Robert Stromberg directed film.

Maleficent is one of Disney’s most iconic, and now her story and will be explored in this film, as she takes front and centre stage.

In a new featurette for the Disney movie, she said: "We've respected the classic, we've tried to bring you what you love about the story.

"We also hope to hope to bring a world that you've never seen before. It's a very beautiful story, and I think it is very different from what people are going to expect."

Maleficent will mark the first time that Jolie has teamed up with Stromberg, as the filmmaker makes his feature film directorial debut with this project.

Maleficent will also mark the first time that we have seen Jolie on the big screen since The Tourist at the end of 2010.

A terrific supporting cast has been assembled around Jolie in Maleficent, as Elle Fanning, Sharlto Copley, Juno Temple, Sam Riley and Imelda Staunton will all star.

As for Jolie, this will be one her only big screen outing this year: however, she will be returning to the director’s chair for Unbroken.

Maleficent is released 28th May.
