DuVernay - who directed Selma earlier this year - had been tipped to become the first female director to helm a Marvel film and Black Panther was expected to be the project that she would get on board.

However, the director has revealed that a difference in ideas has led to this exciting filmmaker not being involved in one of Marvel's exciting new film franchises.

Speaking to Essence, DuVernay said: "I'm not signing on to direct Black Panther. I think I'll just say we had different ideas about what the story would be.

"Marvel has a certain way of doing things and I think they're fantastic and a lot of people love what they do. I loved that they reached out to me."

Black Panther is one of the new franchises that Marvel are set to launch over the next few years and Chadwick Boseman is set to take on the title role. This will be the biggest film of Boseman's career and we will get our first glimpse of the character next year in Captain America: Civil War.

Selma - which followed Martin Luther King's fight for equal voting rights and the march from Selma to Montgomery in 1965 - was the film that has really put DuVernay on the map earlier this year.

Selma went on to scoop the Best Original Song Oscar and be nominated for Best Picture; however, DuVernay was overlooked in the Best Director category.

It seems that the wait will go on for Marvel to hire their first female filmmaker. We are going to have to wait and see who will be at the helm of Black Panther.

Black Panther is released 6th July 2018.
