Joss Whedon has hinted that Avengers: Age of Ultron will see our favourite heroes getting along and not getting along.

There is not long to wait now until Age of Ultron is back on the big screen and will see Whedon returning to writing duties and the director's chair.

Age of Ultron comes three years after Avengers Assemble back in 2012. And while the Avengers are better acquainted this time around, that does not mean that there won't be friction and tension between them.

Speaking to Marvel, the filmmaker said: "There are two things you really want to see, I think, in the second Avengers. You want to see them getting along, and you want to see them not getting along.

"What we find is they can get along great, they're a team, but it's a thin wall between that and chaos. They do get kind of torn apart a little bit."

The movie will see Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, and Mark Ruffalo reprise the roles of Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Thor, Hawkeye, and Hulk in what promises to be a bigger, darker, and grittier movie than the first.

This is the first directorial outing for Whedon since Much Ado About Nothing in 2013 and his first Marvel film since the billion-dollar success of Avengers Assemble. However, this is expected to be Whedon's final Avengers movie.

Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson are two of the big new additions to the cast list as they take on the roles of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver for the first time.

And Whedon says that these are two characters that will 'change the game.' He continued: "Well, besides the fact that I grew up reading about them and, for me, they are in the DNA of The Avengers, it was really important for me to have people who would change the game emotionally and stylistically," he said.

"I wanted to be able to shoot something that was kind of poetic and strange - and her magic and his speed and the way they are and the way they hate The Avengers - it just adds so much to the palette. The two of them are just ridiculously great too."

Avengers: Age of Ultron is released 23rd April.
