Fans of Beetlejuice got very excited last week when it was reported that a long-awaited and much talked about sequel was going ahead... now it appears that it is not.

Sadly, a story from Showbiz Spy, which reported that the film was a go with both Winona Ryder and Michael Keaton on board was false.

A rep for director Tim Burton says that the director did not provide any information about the sequel to the publication.

In a statement from Burton's rep read: "I rep Tim Burton and wanted to let you know that Tim did not provide a statement to confirm Beetlejuice 2 as the movie is not in development.

"Tim's focus is entirely on 'Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children' and developing 'Dumbo'".

It was back in 1988 when Beetlejuice first hit the big screen for the first time, starring Keaton, Ryder, Geena Davis, Alec Baldwin, and Catherine O'Hara.

Beetlejuice was the second feature film of Burton's career and came three years after he made his debut with Pee-wee's Big Adventure. He would go on to reunite with Keaton a year later for Batman.

Beetlejuice has become a major cult hit over the years and there has been a lot of talk about a possible sequel for quite some time. Sadly, it looks like the project will not be going ahead any time soon.

Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children will be the next film for Burton and will be his first feature since Big Eyes back in 2014 - it is always great to see him back in the director's chair.

The movie sees him reunite with Eva Green - who takes on the title role - while Samuel L. Jackson, Asa Butterfield, Allison Janney, Judi Dench, and Chris O'Dowd are just some of the other big names that are on board.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is released later this year.
