Ben Stiller says that The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is 'less cynical' than movies he has made in the past.

Stiller will take on the title role in the movie as well as returning to the director's chair for the first time since Tropic Thunder.

Speaking to Metro the actor said: "It's open-hearted and less cynical than the movies I have directed before.

"I didn't think about this film being inspiring when making it. I just wanted people to connect with it because I connected with this story."

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is based on the 1939 short story by James Thurber, and has been adapted for the big screen by Steve Conrad.

Stiller will lead an all star cast as he stars alongside Kristen Wiig, Sean Penn and Shirley MacLaine.

Stiller made his feature film directorial debut with Reality Bites in 1994. He went on to direct The Cable Guy, Zoolander and Tropic Thunder.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is released 26th December.
