Johnny Depp is no stranger to the gangster genre and he is set to return to it at the end of November with his new film Black Mass, which will see him take on the role of the notorious Whitey Bulger.

Black Mass

We have seen Depp star in the likes of Public Enemies and Donnie Brasco during his career, but this looks set to be his greatest performance in this genre of film.

Black Mass sees Scott Cooper back in the director's chair for the first time since Out of the Furnace and it also marks the first time that the filmmaker has teamed up with Depp.

In this brand new featurette the director and the cast talk about the transformation that Depp went on to be able to play this role - I really cannot wait to see him in action:

A wonderful cast has ben assembled for the film, as Benedict Cumberbatch, Joel Edgerton, Kevin Bacon, Jesse Plemmons, and Dakota Johnson are just some of the great names that are on board.

In 1970s South Boston, FBI Agent John Connolly (Edgerton) persuades Irish mobster Jimmy Bulger (Depp) to collaborate with the FBI in order to eliminate their common enemy: the Italian mob.

The drama tells the story of this unholy alliance, which spiraled out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement while consolidating his power and becoming one of the most ruthless and dangerous gangsters in Boston history.

Black Mass is set to play at the BFI London Film Festival next month and is one of the autumn movies that's not to be missed.

Depp's central performance is already being tipped as a potential Best Actor Oscar contender - he hasn't been in the Oscar race since Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street back in 2007.

Black Mass is released 27th November.
