Singer is back in the director's chair with X-Men: Apocalypse, which sees him reunite with Jennifer Lawrence as she reprises the role of Mystique.

It will be the third time that Lawrence has played this role while Rebecca Romijn played this character in the first three X-men films.

And of all the X-Men characters, Singer believes that Mystique is one of the most interesting and should get a solo film.

Speaking to the Empire Spoiler podcast, the director said: "I think [Mystique's] right for [a standalone], whether it's Jennifer or not. She has this different view of the world: Xavier can get into Cerebro and look at the world but he'd rather just teach classes and see the beauty of mutants and humans co-existing in his mansion in Westchester.

"Along comes Raven with a reality check on the state of the world. It opens up a lot of avenues."

So far, Wolverine and Deadpool are the only X-Men characters to have been given their own solo films - but there has been a varied degree of success.

A third Wolverine film is in the pipeline while a solo Gambit film has also been given the green light and will star Channing Tatum.

As for Singer, X-Men: Apocalypse is the fourth X-Men movie that he has directed and he is set to take a break from the franchise.

His next project is an adaptation of the Jules Verne novel 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. The film is currently in pre-production but no cast list has yet been announced.

X-Men: Apocalypse is out now.
