Bryan Singer is back in the director's chair for X-Men: Apocalypse and wanted to do something 'different' with his latest X-Men film.

Singer is no stranger to this franchise with X-Men, X2, and X-Men: Days of Future Past under his belt since 2000.

In fact, this is the first time that we have seen Singer in the director's chair since he enjoyed critical and commercial success with Days of Future Past back in 2014.

The director was on the blue carpet in London this week where he talked about the film. He said: "I just tried to create a new story, a new villain, and some sequences that were greater in scope and more challenging. It was just about doing something different."

And the director says that we are also going to see a very different villain this time around as we are introduced to Oscar Isaac as Apocalypse.

He continued: "What is great about the villain is that he is very different from Magneto and makes no distinction between humans and mutants.

"He is an ancient villain from tens of thousands of years ago who has enormous power and accumulates power. Oscar Isaac is just an astonishing actor and I was blessed to have him."

The movie sees Singer reunite with James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult and Evan Peters. He also adds some big new additions to the cast list including Isaac, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Olivia Munn, Ben Hardy, and Kodi Smit-McPhee.

2016 is set to be a very busy year for the director as he currently has 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea in pre-production. The film is expected to hit the big screen next year but no cast has officially been announced.

X-Men: Apocalypse is released 18th May.
