Mulligan stars alongside Meryl Streep and Helena Bonham Carter in the new historical period drama 'Suffragette', and she's amazed that the fight to give women the right to vote has been neglected by the movie business.

She said: "I thought I knew a lot about the suffrage movement and I didn't. When I started reading the script, I had my eyes opened to a lot of things. And it kind of just struck me that it being so crazy that the story had never been told.

"So to finally bring the story to the screen was a massive deal to me."

However, Carey admitted that the problem is not restricted to the film industry.

She told CNN: "It's the fault of our education. I mean, I definitely didn't learn about the suffrage movement at school. There was a tiny paragraph dedicated to it in my history book.

"You know, at the time - when it all happened - it was documented by men. The newspapers were run by men and they were controlled by the parliament. So some of the stuff that happened went completely undocumented."
