Blanchett was linked to the third solo Thor film earlier this year and could well take on the role of Hela - something that has yet to be announced by the studio.

This will be the first time that we have seen the actress in a comic book movie and it is her first blockbuster since the success of The Hobbit trilogy.

And Blanchett reveals that there are a few reasons why she jumped on board.

Speaking to South Korean publication Moloive, the actress said: "I'm super, super excited about it. I've only done action a couple of times, so it feels like... a departure is too strong a word, but it certainly seems like a change for me.

So, I am looking forward to getting really fit, and wearing lycra, and hoping to earn a bit of street cred from my kids. I can't wait."

Thor: Ragnarok sees Chris Hemsworth reprise the title role while Tom Hiddleston is set to return as Loki. We are also going to see Mark Ruffalo back as Bruce Banner for what will be his first appearance outside the Avengers films.

Taika Waititi is set to take over the director's chair as he joins Marvel for the first time. Thor: Ragnarok will also be his first feature film since Hunt for the Wilderpeople. He will be the third director for the Thor franchise and follows in the footsteps of Kenneth Branagh and Alan Taylor.

Filming is due to get under way later this year for an autumn 2017 release. Thor: Ragnarok will be the third of three Marvel films to hit the big screen next year with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 and a solo Spider-Man film also set for release.

As for Blanchett, she has been enjoying huge critical success with Carol and missed out on the Best Actress Oscar to Brie Larson earlier this year.

The actress has also completed work on Weightless and Jungle Book: Origins, in which she will bring the character of Kaa to life.

Thor: Ragnarok is released 27th October 2017.
