The superhero film - based on the Marvel Comics character was due to hit cinemas on October 7, 2016, but it does not appear in the studio's new set of release dates.

The delay may be due to director Rupert Wyatt dropping out of the project on September 2015.

Doug Liman now has responsibility for bringing the action film to live on the big screen after signing on in November of the same year.

Despite the delay, Channing is "super excited" to be starring in the 'X-Men' spin-off written by Josh Zetumer.

The 35-year-old actor previously said: "The first draft of the script is killer. None of us were sure how he was going to deal with the 'X-Men' world. But we're going to be changing some of the tropes of these movies. It's always about saving the world, but maybe we're going to shift things a little bit. There's so many ways you can take (an origin story). You could do it like 'Batman Begins', or a different take and go the 'Guardians of the Galaxy' route. All I can say is, I'm super excited."

Fox has also caused a buzz by slating two mystery Marvel projects with release dates of October 6, 2017 and January 12, 2018.

A 2017 release date for 'Gambit' is expected to be announced in due course.
